Spurensuche: ‘Spurensuche’ means ‘Search for traces’. I first went to Berlin in 1987, as part of a youth group. Back then we had to travel through East Germany to get there, a long motorway stretch with barbed wire and check posts on both sides, of which I took forbidden pictures. In West Berlin the intensity of the place absolutely threw me; the Nazi headquarters past alongside the impossibility to get out of the city as it was surrounded by the wall. We also travelled on the underground to East Berlin, which was an incredible experience. More or less the next time I went was in 2000, upon which I retraced my former steps in this city that now had changed tremendously. I started to take photographs. During a visit to Berlin in 2006 I took up this project again and completed it. The work is not meant so much as a comprehensive study of traces left over from the past but rather a re-search for places that deeply impressed me alongside new ones that came into the equation.
